The Power of Resilience and Growth through Adversity

How Brain Surgery didn’t stop my Hair Business Hustle!

Before brain surgery at Kaiser Hospital

It all unraveled in the blink of an eye. One moment, I was navigating my day-to-day life, and the next, I found myself at UCLA Medical, grappling with a diagnosis—a brain stem malformation. Just weeks later, the situation took a terrifying turn. I collapsed unexpectedly, and before I knew it, I was being rushed to Kaiser in an ambulance, my brain bleeding dangerously. The urgency was unmistakable—brain surgery was now my only option to prevent even more catastrophic consequences.

At Stanford Hospital in recovery after brain surgery

As I underwent brain surgery at Stanford and embarked on the path of healing, my hair business journey continued to unfold. We won more awards and our sales and marketing etc. were increasing, as well as the demands of the business. I realized that the principles guiding my recovery were remarkably similar to those that had led to my business’s growth – patience, adaptability, and to focus on progress rather than perfection.

I had to relearn basic skills like walking and talking—things I once took for granted—I also stayed deeply committed to growing my hair business. Despite the challenges of physical therapy and constant doctor appointments at UCLA and Stanford, I managed everything from customer service and inventory management to networking, shipping, email marketing, etc.. The work was relentless, but it gave me purpose and drive, helping me stay focused even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Today, the struggle is undeniably real—I’m navigating challenges with my speech, balance, and persistent headaches. But despite these obstacles, I refuse to let them define me. In fact, they’ve become a source of fuel for my determination and growth to not just survive but thrive, both in my health journey and in my business endeavors.

Overcoming brain surgery with the support of family and friends

Every challenge is a reminder of my inner strength, resilience, and with the unwavering support of my incredible family and friends, I’m learning to embrace change as a catalyst for growth. This journey has taught me that adaptability is not just about coping—it’s about thriving. I’m continually evolving, learning to turn each setback into a stepping stone toward something greater.

The resilience I’ve built in my personal life is the very foundation of my business’s continued success. Through every hurdle, I’m finding new ways to rise, proving that true strength lies not in avoiding challenges, but in embracing them and emerging stronger on the other side.

Today with my family in Oregon

My experience of navigating brain surgery and building a hair business was an unexpected journey, but it revealed that challenges and opportunities can indeed coexist. With the right mindset, a supportive network, and a commitment to growth, overcoming obstacles becomes possible. It’s not an easy path, but celebrating every small win helps maintain momentum and perspective. Even the smallest blessings are remarkable and contribute significantly to our overall success and resilience.
